You may ask what’s in it for me? As our young mothers embark on life obstacles she will say her mentor helped her grow into a productive adult. Her mentor was there to listen, encourage, support and understand. And it’s because of her mentor she’s able to make wiser decisions throughout life. There can be no greater feeling in the world. Mentors will show our young mothers that even though they decided to have a baby at a young age it is not too late to follow/achieve their goals.

MENTORS must meet the following requirements:

-Must be of the female gender;

-Must be twenty-five years of age or older;

-Must be attending college, working or involved in community service;

-Must be a New York City resident for at least 6 months;

-Must have stability within your living, job and education situation;

-Must have stability within your mental & emotional situation;

-High level of interest to work with teen mothers;

-Agrees to follow the rules of My Sister’s Keeper;

-Ability to make long-term commitments (12 months minimum);

-Ability to meet with your mentee 3 days a month for at least 4 hours, 2 days of which MUST be face-to face contact and 1 day via phone or e-mail (more time is acceptable);

-Ability to handle diverse situations;

-Ability to think outside the box;

-Ability to be patient and nonjudgmental;

-Understand the role of a "Mentor";

-Ability to maintain a healthy/loyal friendship with your mentee;

-Ability to have fun.
